Sabbath

Judges 11-12; Luke 6:1-26

What is Sabbath for?

Two places in the Old Testament feature Sabbath prominently–Genesis 1 (Creation) and Exodus 20 (Ten Commandments).

And then here in the Gospels we see the conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees. For the Pharisees, it’s a cultural marker. It’s one of the Big Three things that make them different from the pagans, the Greeks and the Romans (circumcision and not eating pork being the other two). For the Pharisees, “We Sabbath because we’re not Them.”

But for Jesus, in continuity with Genesis and Exodus, Sabbath is for celebrating the good work of God.

Do you Sabbath? And why?
